Year 7 Camps at Mount Cameron Field Study Centre
Our Year 7s who chose to attend the camps at our Mount Cameron Field Study Centre had a wonderful time even though the weather, at times, was cool and wet. It is great to see students venturing out of their comfort zones, getting to know one another better along with their teachers and enjoying our beautiful environment. Many thanks to Mr John Le Fevre, our resident Field Study Teacher, for the outstanding organisation and running of the camps. A lot of fun and enjoyment was had by all. Thanks to students for demonstrating a great attitude and to staff who gave of their time to attend the camps.
Mock Interviews Year 9s
We greatly appreciate the support of our local businesses who have welcomed our Year 9 students for Mock Interviews. This is a valuable learning experience for students and helps them to build their communication skills and confidence.
Year 10 Exams
Well done to our Year 10s who sat exams this week for English, Mathematics and Science. This helps many students to gain a taster of what sitting an exam may be like in Year 11 and 12, helping to alleviate some anxiety and be able to sit and concentrate for an extended length of time.
Scottsdale High Centenary – Saturday 22 October
As we prepare for the Centenary celebration on Saturday 22 October, we are enjoying looking through memorabilia including the Scottsdale High School Magazine, Minstral. In keeping with students enjoying Outdoor Education at the school, here is a flashback to 1975 of the mountaineering group at Mussel Roe Bay! You may recognise some names or faces!
NAPLAN – INDIVIDUAL STUDENT REPORTS (ISRS)
We are due to receive individual Student Reports for NAPLAN. These will posted home to families over the next week.
How are NAPLAN results used?
- Students and parents/carers may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
- Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
- Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools
Communication to Families – School Satisfaction Survey 2022 - Reminder
Thank you to families who have completed the 2022 School Satisfaction Survey!
Every year the Department of Education conducts School Satisfaction Surveys to find out what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our school improvement planning and decision-making.
If you have not had the opportunity to complete the survey about Scottsdale High School yet, it is open until Friday 23 September 2022 and should take about 5 minutes of your time.
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this link or pasting it in your browser: https://ncv.microsoft.com/0wCQ6YOy7l
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department of Education staff.
Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey as your feedback helps us in our planning and areas for future improvement.
JCP Empowering Youth Seminar – ‘The Choice is Yours’
Years 7 – 8: Monday 19 September, 2022
Years 9- 10: Monday 26 September, 2022
In the next two weeks of this term we have JCP Youth visiting us to provide a half day program for our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students in the PAC at Scottdale High School. Will Smith is CEO and Founder of JCP and he won the 2020 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year for his work with youth. JCP Youth run a range of seminars with students across Tasmania. Our students will be undertaking a half day program, ‘The Choice is Yours’, delivered by the JCP team.
This is a very inspirational and motivational program that has been delivered in many high schools in Tasmania. Students will have recesses as normal. Students will have their regular Block 4 class in the afternoon.
Will grew up in a shed. No electricity, running water or flushing toilet. He has worked as a tactical operator in the Special Operations Group. He is known for his decade long youth work; developing, implementing and connecting innovative youth programs in Australia and around the world. Will is at the fore-front of personal development for at-risk and vulnerable young people. He has received a Human Rights Award for his work and has been recognised in the Australian of the Year Awards. Outside JCP Youth, Will is a sought after speaker due to his leadership and mindset developed training.
This year marks 100 years of School Psychology in Tasmania’s public schools.
In our increasingly complex world, our school psychologists work tirelessly to provide specialist skills and support to the children and young people in our care. We are marking this milestone with a special slogan ‘Living our values for 100 years – Aspiration, Courage, Respect and Growth,’ which is an integral part of all that our School Psychologists do.
To thank our school psychologists a ‘Week of Recognition’ has been set aside from 26-30 September. We encourage all our sites to give a big shout out to their psychologists and a big thank you for all they do during this time. We particularly want to acknowledge Annie for all her dedicated work at Scottsdale High School.

Week 6 and 7 saw three Year 7 groups (7B, 7C and a combined 7A/D) head to the Field Study Centre (FSC) for a one night camp. For many this was their first experience to the FSC. Day one included a three hour bush walk taking in views of the North-East from the Douglas Lookout. Back at camp some fears of heights were challenged on the cargo net. A camp fire and movie after dinner rounded off a busy day. Day two saw everyone challenging themselves by taking on the flying fox, the giant smiles and requests for more turns showed that it was worth it. After tidying and cleaning up the FSC, some team and individual obstacles were undertaken and students showed some excellent problem solving skills. After this, we returned to school having enjoyed a jam packed two days. A huge thanks to the staff who helped make these camps a success.

Calving has began at our Stronach View Farm Campus with lots of very cute little Angus and Angus/Speckle Park cross babies.
This time of the year is so rewarding, as we see the results of our planned breeding program. All cows are synchronised and artificially inseminated with carefully chosen sires. We work in close collaboration with Bovine Breeding Services and appreciate all the hard work and advice from Ben and Carmel during the year.

Fertiliser makes our grass grow at Stronach View Campus and grass makes our cows happy.
Thank you to McDougalls Spreading Service who have supported the School Farm for more than 20 years.

Tasmanian Minerals Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC)
This week, Scottsdale High School hosted an Industry Representative from TMEC who discussed with a group of Year 9/10 students the career opportunities available within the manufacturing industry. Students also engaged in a practical activity focussing on the engineering design process including budgeting and design review.
Thank you to Ivan for making this opportunity available to our students.

Interschools Dressage and Showjumping

On Saturday 3rd September, Amelia (Year 12) and Bridie (Year 8) represented Scottsdale High School at the Northern Interschools Dressage competition. Amelia riding Royal Griffin completed two wonderful dressage tests to place second in her class. Bridie riding Captain PJ had two calm dressage tests in their first official outing.
On Sunday 4th September, Maddie (Year 8) riding Mack, joined us to compete in the Showjumping competition. She rode extremely well, placing fourth in the 50cm class and a lazy rail in the 60cm jump off cost her a chance at the placings. Well done Maddie on your results in your first official competition! Bridie had two clear rounds in the 60cm and 70cm classes, placing third in the 70cm class. Amelia had two clear rounds in the 80cm class and had a single rail in the 90cm class. Well done to all riders! You presented yourselves beautifully and showed great horsemanship. Special congratulations to Amelia who has competed in every Interschools competition since its inception. Ringarooma Primary and Scottsdale High School equestrian teams have big shoes to fill. We will miss you!

Music Academy students have recently been visited by members of the Bridport Scallop Fiesta committee. They were recognised for their valuable contribution to the festival in playing the opening sets of entertainment for the festival this year. The students received a cheque from the committee for their efforts and decided to spend it on a pizza lunch to celebrate in Week 8 of this term. The group invited the Music extension students to join them for the special lunch.

The Great Wall of China in Cake
Students in 7A/B rose to the HASS challenge on Wednesday and recreated The Great Wall of China in cake… proudly known as The Great Cake Wall of China. They worked in small teams to ensure we were able complete our mission within one block. Our final cake construction reached the length of five metres.

Many thanks to Ms Simmons and the HOL team for providing the cakes. A special thanks to Mr Tyson for all of his extra effort and work, and to the students who helped set up, clean and pack up…. The dream team!
Great work 7A/B. It was worth waiting 20 years for the right group for this challenge! It was fun!!!

7A/B Class Teacher
David from Nutrien visited our Year 9/10 Ag class to help start our Agriculture work on careers, and talk about the company and various career opportunities. He shared some really good advice on how to write a resume, research for a job application and prepare for an interview. Students listened attentively and demonstrated excellent behaviour. Thank you David for taking the time to present to our students.
Emmet from Rural Bank and Cows Create Careers came to speak to our Year 7 and 8 Agriculture classes. He spoke about his past careers and how it lead him into his position today, where a career in the dairy industry can take you, the financial side of dairy farming and how to look for signs of good health in calves. The Year 7 class reached the record thinking of 40 jobs associated in producing a tub of yoghurt. Thank you Emmet for giving us your time and expertise.
