Term 4 is well underway with students and staff returning to school with a positive focus on making the most of their learning time. Our final term is always a busy and very exciting time on our school calendar and there is much to look forward to. During this term we will be reviewing student learning growth and the progress we have made against our school improvement goals. Our Year 11 and 12 students are to be congratulated for their achievements this year and we wish them all the best with their final assessments. Students undertaking pre-tertiary subjects (Level 3) are preparing for exams and some have already submitted folios for external assessment. Congratulations to all our Year 11 and 12 students who were presented with certificates and subject and special awards at the Celebration Evening last night.
Welcome to Mrs Christine Taylor who is teaching Year 8 Maths and Science as Mr Buechner is on Long Service Leave for this term.
This term we have a number of things to celebrate:
Scottsdale High Centenary
Our Centenary Celebrations were a highlight in our first week of Term 4. We started the week with our teachers wearing 1920s fashion and on Wednesday we held a Whole School Assembly in the morning and in the afternoon the SLB planted a Japanese Maple Tree which was selected as the leaves turn the school House colours of red, yellow and green. The tree planting was followed by cupcakes cooked by Abbi Young, Year 10 SLB Vice President. Abbi cooked 300 cupcakes and they were delicious! Many thanks to Abbi for sharing her culinary skills with the school and for her contribution to the Centenary Celebrations.

Saturday 22 October was our official opening of the School’s Centenary. The Hon. Craig Farrell MLC, a former student, opened the Centenary Celebrations and presented a plaque to commemorate the occasion. We were very fortunate to have past alumni, Terry Aulich, Ian Farquhar and John Beswick share their recollections and the importance of the school in the local community. The Hon. Tania Rattray MLC, also a former student, closed the Assembly. Tori Rattray and our school band performed musical items including Oh Boy by Buddy Holly (a song Tori learnt in Year 7 music when she was at SHS) and Stand by Me by B.E King. Thanks also to Bridget Archer, MP, Federal Member for Bass, Mayor Greg Howard and councillors who attended and to former principals, Ann Fedyk and Natalie Odgers, for joining us for the celebration.

We had approximately 200 people attend the Assembly and many more joined us after to tour the school and have a trip down memory lane as they viewed the memorabilia in the Library. Scottsdale Rotary Club kindly assisted with catering ensuring no one went hungry during the day.

Many thanks to the Centenary Committee for all their significant contribution and time given: Jenny Bicanic, Paige Howard, Anthony Jessup, Karen Rainbow and Brittany Walker.
Thanks to the students who assisted with catering, displays, musical performances and the Assembly. Well done to our SLB leaders, Jayda, Bridie and Abbi, who were our MCs, gave the Welcome to Country and shared the history of the school with the audience.

I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful Education Facility Attendants and the following people who contributed to the success of the day:
Carolyn and Craig Bryan, Ray Van Engen– Memorabilia display
Dannielle Butler – Flowers
Tiah Simmons and Rosanne Dawson – Catering
Tobias Moldenhauer – Musical items
Damien Hyland – Coasters with School Logo
Brittany Walker – Assembly co-ordination and script
Whilst the Centenary celebrations were a team effort, I would particularly like to acknowledge Paige Howard for her strong leadership and outstanding co-ordination of the event. Thanks for giving so much of your time and effort, Paige!
It was wonderful for our community to come together to mark this milestone in Scottsdale High School’s history.
Cattle Handlers success at Hobart Show
Congratulations to our Cattle Handlers and Mrs Kylie Rattray on their amazing success at the Hobart Show last week! A report further in this newsletter details the awards won including Most Successful Exhibitor. We are very proud of this group of students and Mrs Rattray – their hard work and commitment is evidenced by the success at the Show. Well done to you and we wish you well with the upcoming shows.
7/8 Boys Netball Team – Runners Up in State Netball Competition
Well done to our Year 7/8 Boys Netball team who runners up in the State Netball finals and played in Hobart yesterday. The boys performed exceptionally well and were narrowly beaten by 4 goals. There was some strong competition and it was great to hear how much students enjoyed the day. Thanks to Miss Walker and Mr Hyland for accompanying the students.
Inter-High Swimming Carnival- Thursday 28 October
Well done to our students who were selected in our Interhigh Swimming team on their participation; all the students put in a super effort.
Congratulations to Ava B who broke the record in the Year 7 Girls 50m Butterfly. She also won the Year 7 Girls 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke and Backstroke as well as winning the Year 9 Girls, 100m freestyle! Taia L swam extremely well placing first in the Year10 Girls 50m Breaststroke, second in the 100m Breaststroke and third in the 50m Freestyle. Thanks to Mrs Simmons for accompanying the students.
Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to Minstone House for narrowly winning the Athletics Carnival. Ellesmere finished a close second, followed by Stronach, with the relay events deciding the winner. Well done to all students who enthusiastically participated and supported their peers.
There is also a lot that has been happening and things coming up on our school calendar:
Transition Year 6 into Year 7 and Year 10 in to Year 12
The Transition Program to support our incoming Year 6 students is now well underway and has included small groups of students visiting our school along with visits to Bridport, Ringarooma and Scottsdale Primary Schools. We have been impressed with the enthusiasm, courtesy and respect demonstrated by the Year 6 students and we look forward to having them as part of our school community.
- We are holding a Parent Information Session for parents and carers whose children will be in Year 7 in 2023 on Thursday 10th November at 5pm in the school library.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students have commenced enrolling in courses for 2023 at Scottsdale High, Launceston College and Newstead College. We have received very positive feedback about our students from the college enrollers.
World Teachers' Day – Friday 28 October
This Friday is also World Teacher’s Day. A huge thankyou to our teaching staff –your skill, dedication and commitment to our students is valued! I really appreciate that students and parents often contact us and take the time to thank or acknowledge a staff member for something they have done to support, challenge, extend or nurture a student. Please continue to do this –it is greatly valued and appreciated!
JCP Empowering Youth Workshops with Will Smith
In the last two weeks of Term 3 students spent half a day in a workshop with JCP Empowering Youth, with a focus on responsible decision making, risk taking and peer pressure. The workshop, led by Will Smith, aligned to some key messages students have been focused on including being a positive citizen, making good decisions and being a leader. The day was very timely and provoked some good discussion and thinking.
Student Free Day – Professional Learning Day for Staff – Friday 4 November
A reminder that next Friday 4 November is a Professional Learning Day (student free). Staff will be using this valuable time for their learning with a focus on reviewing our work from this year and planning for 2023.
Students needing to remain on site all day
We have a duty of care for students during the day. Year 7-10 students are not permitted to leave the school grounds. We have an excellent canteen and K1 Cafe that students can access. If in exceptional circumstances your child needs to leave the school grounds, students must have written permission from their parent/carer and must sign in and out through the office.
Students also need to enter the school grounds as soon as they arrive by bus or are dropped off by their parent or carer.
Making every school day count
This final stretch of the school year can sometimes be challenging to get your kids to school. But being at school is the best place for our kids, and it’s important we make every school day count.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
Here are some tips to help:
- Create a routine.
- Give yourself enough time in the morning.
- Be on time, every day. Monday to Friday.
- Schedule appointments and trips outside of school hours.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Set some technology boundaries.
If your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday.
Data tells us that the better a child’s attendance rate, the better off they’ll be. Their future will be filled with more opportunities…. which is what every parent and carer wants for their child.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence.
Again, please talk to us about your situation if you’re having trouble getting your child to school every day.
Elizabeth Williams
Principal
Congratulations to our Year 11 and 12 students who received awards at the Year 11/12 Celebration Dinner.
As the end of 2022 is fast approaching, we are beginning to plan for 2023. To assist Parents and Carers to support student subject selections and understand changes to the timetable structure for 2023, we will be holding a Parent Information Session in the PAC on Thursday the 10th of November from 5.00pm-6.00pm the focus will be on Year 7. This will be followed by a tour of the school and light refreshments from 6.00pm-6.30pm.
The information session for Years 8 to 10 will be from 6.30pm-7.30pm. All Parents and Carers are welcome and encouraged to attend the information session and tour. The following day students will receive information about their subject selections and plans for 2023. We look forward to seeing you there!

Starting our Term off with a flying start, Scottsdale High School held their Athletics Carnival on the first Thursday and Friday of Term 4. With the weather looking doubtful, we pushed on to make the most of the beaming sun on Thursday, and, despite a scud or two on Friday, we were able to successfully complete both days!
Across the two days, staff and students were treated to a display of house spirit, sportsmanship and a great amount of effort and courage as students succeeded at a multitude of field and track events. A standout performance was on Day 2 of the carnival, with Taia Lette breaking the Year 10 Girls High Jump school record by 4cm! The new record stands at 1.58m.
A massive congratulations to all students who participated, and a warm welcome to those who will make it to our Inter-high Athletics team, set to run Monday 14th November. A big thankyou from the HPE Team goes out to all the amazing staff and students who helped make the two days run as smoothly as a possible. The final results from the two days are below:
Minstone: 1st 1119 pts
Ellesmere: 2nd 1106 pts
Stronach: 3rd 710 pts
The Inter-High swimming carnival was held at the Launceston Aquatic centre yesterday. A small team of students represented the school with Ava Blundstone producing some excellent swims to break the record in the Year 7 girls 50m butterfly. She also won the Year 7 girls 50m freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke as well as winning the Year 9 girls, 100m freestyle. Taia Lette swam extremely well placing 1st in the Year 10 girls, 50m breaststroke, 2nd in the 100m breaststroke and 3rd in the 50m freestyle. All students did a fantastic job and had a great day.
