Dear Parents/Carers
I hope that you have all enjoyed the holiday break and that students are looking forward to the year ahead at Scottsdale High School.
We are very pleased to be welcoming new families to Scottsdale High School along with the Year 7 students. For 2023, we have 71 Year 7 students enrolled. I am pleased to report there has certainly been a "buzz" around the school with the reconnecting of friends and staff. We have been delighted to see the engagement in learning.
Students have made a very positive start to the year with teachers focused on creating calm and orderly learning environments. Students are busy familiarising themselves with routines, expectations and developing positive working relationships with their peers and teachers. Thank you to parents/carers for supporting and ensuring students come to school in full uniform and that they are presented well for learning and school. Please contact your child’s AST if you require support accessing uniform.

The lead up to the start of the school year is always a busy. We would like to acknowledge the wonderful contribution that a range of people have made in assisting with us getting the school year underway.
- A huge thank you to our Admin and EFA team who are always the first teams to return to work after the holidays and who play an essential role in organising and preparing our school for the return of both staff and students.
- I would like to extend a thank you to Jodi Crack and Courtney Ellem who provided a great service to families with uniform sales.
- Many thanks to Kylie Rattray for all her work with the school farm over the holiday period.,
- A big thank you to our students and families who assisted Kylie Rattray with baling hay on the school farm during the holidays – our hay carters did a fantastic job!
- Thank you to our Leadership team who were involved in significant planning and preparation to set up for the start of this year.
MOUNT CAMERON FIELD STUDY CENTRE- THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS AND WOOLNORTH RENEWABLES
Scottsdale High School is very fortunate to have Mount Cameron Field Study Centre as a facility our students can use as part of the Outdoor Education Program. Mr John Le Fevre is the AST who oversees the programs along with the facility. Outdoor education programs are also offered to other schools, including schools in the public, independent and Catholic sectors. There is a dedicated group of locals, led by Craig Searle and David Waldron, who contribute their time and manpower to ensuring the Centre is well maintained. Prior to Christmas, Wayne Johnson slashed both sides of the access road to clear vegetation and improve sight lines on corners. Adrian Cassidy then graded and repaired both our road and the Old Port Road up to our corner. Both have done a wonderful job. Woolnorth Renewables (owners of the Mussleroe Wind Farm) have kindly paid for the Old Port Road work and also donated gravel for our road.
We are very grateful for the support given by Mr Le Fevre, our volunteers and Woolnorth Renewables to Mount Cameron Field Study Centre. The work and contributions enable our students to fully engage in their outdoor learning activities at the Centre.
Our Student Leadership Board will have a leadership camp at the centre next week and they are really looking forward to having the camp at Mount Cameron.
ATTENDANCE AND LATENESS
It is vital that students attend school every day. A sense of purpose and commitment is achieved with regular attendance. Every child has a chance of success with their learning when they attend regularly. Please encourage your children to value their education and help them become organised and attend every day. Please make appointments before or after school hours. It is also important to get your child to school on time. Home Group starts at 8.50am. Students miss important information when they arrive late. Please do not let your child be late. This can develop into a poor habit that affects learning when prolonged.
UNIFORM
Students are looking very smart in the Scottsdale High School uniform. Well done to students for representing the school with pride and thanks to parents for your support. Please contact your child’s AST if you need any support with uniform.
The uniform requirements are:
- The Everyday Uniform MUST be worn on every school day including excursions (except where specified)
- Sports clothes are encouraged to be worn during Health and PE and Physical Recreation blocks, or when a student is participating in a school sports activity
- Closed shoes MUST be worn at all times during school activities. No ugg boots
- Plain black, long sleeved hoodless shirts may be worn under the school polo
- Students must NOT wear hoods during school activities/excursions and whilst on school sites
The School Association have endorsed our uniform dress code and support the following reasons that full school uniform should be worn:
- Sense of Belonging
When students are dressed in school uniform, they all have a sense of belonging to the Scottsdale High School community.
- Safety
It is easy to identify people who should not be on the school grounds if students are in full school uniform.
- Judgements About Our School
We present a positive image to the wider community if all our students are in school uniform and people are more likely to make positive judgements about our school and our students.
- Social Equalisation
Students are not judged on the basis of what they are wearing if all students are in school uniform. Having all students in school uniform sends a strong message that we value all students equally.
- Preparing for Expectations in the World of Work
Many workplaces have a uniform and most workplaces have a dress code, so we are preparing students for the world of work by asking them to be in the habit of wearing a uniform at school.
MOBILE PHONE; REMINDER OFF AND AWAY ALL DAY
Thanks to parents and carers for your support around mobile phones being off and away all day as per the Department of Education policy. It is great to see students focusing on their learning in class and socialising with one another at break times. Here is a reminder about what will happen if your child breaches the policy:
What happens if my child breaches the policy?
- First Breach - Warning issued: Year 7/8 Home Group teacher or Year 9/10 Home Group teacher will initially contact parents by email if students have their phones out during class or breaks and request your support to have a word with your child about following the expectations.
- Second Breach - Consequence applied: If there is a second breach of the policy, your child’s sector co-ordinator will email and your child will have the choice of leaving their phone at home for two weeks or handing it in to the office for two weeks where it will be safely stored for the day. We ask that if this consequence does need to occur, you let your child’s sector co-ordinator know by responding to the email whether the phone is to be left at home or stored at the Office for 10 days. If your child is to bring their phone to school rather than leave it at home, they must take it to the Office at the start of the day where it will be safely stored until they collect it at 3pm.
- If caught a third time, consequences will be in place by AST's and AP's.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL HOURS DUTY OF CARE
A reminder that staff are not on duty until 8.20am and that students should not be on school grounds or inside school buildings until this time. Prior to this, students are the responsibility of parents and/or carers.

Year 9 students in English are studying a unit on Short Stories. Students are completing a pre- assessment task.

Year 10 students in English are studying a unit on a film called 'Ten Things I Hate About You'. Students will be constructing a trematic essay based on this text.

Year 9-10 students have had an immensely settled start to the year. Circle work and getting to know students has been large focus for Home Group teachers daily.

Year 11 - 12 students are settling into the new school year, working on VET qualifications in Engineering, Automotive and Agriculture, and a wide range of TASC subjects. Weekly routines are starting to take shape and courses are getting into learning straight away. There is a wonderful helpfulness mindset in the sector. Year 12 students have been assisting Year 11 students log onto online courses and resolve other small issues such as how to read a timetable. The dedication to completing educational goals is highly evident. We look forward to the year ahead.
