The past weeks have been busy ones for students and staff, with a number of events, excursions, camps and an Orientation Day for Year 6 students. Many thanks to Miss Walker and Miss Hall for the work they have been doing to help transition the Year 6 students to Year 7 and to the staff who assisted on Orientation Day. We look forward to welcoming the Year 6 students and their families next year as part of the Scottsdale High School community.
Congratulations to Miss Gab Brown who was married last weekend. We wish her and Brad all the best for a lifetime of love, happiness and laughter.
Disney’s High School Musical
Our school production, Disney’s High School Musical, opens on Monday 4th December in the PAC (Performing Arts Centre). Rehearsals have been in full swing under the direction of Miss Walker and Mrs Sharp. We are really looking forward to showcasing the talents of our students as they take to the stage to entertain us. Tickets are still available from the school office.
Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT).
Over the past few weeks, all students have engaged in Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT). PAT assessments measure what students understand and helps us to monitor progress over time. This set of data is a requirement in Tasmanian schools and are in addition to National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). PAT provides a useful set of data which assists at the whole school, classroom and individual level. PAT data will be available next week but our initial monitoring of the data indicates that a strong percentage of students have experienced growth in their literacy and numeracy skills this year. Thank you to Mrs Butler and Miss Rainbow for co-ordinating the testing in our school.
Nathan ‘Dubsy’ Want – Guest Speaker
On Monday 13th November we welcomed Nathan “Dubsy’ Want who spoke to our students along with Year 6 students from Ringarooma Primary and Year 5/6 students from Bridport Primary. Nathan is a dynamic youth speaker and author with a background in working with young people, He is passionate about helping young people navigate the inescapable moments that will come in their lifetime through sharing stories, sharing insightful and providing practical tools. The focus of his session was on Social Media and how words matter. Nathan encouraged our students to think about the impact their words can have on others and to be part of the solution, by interacting positively online, reporting anything they see or read that causes harm and to seek support of adults. Several copies of Nathan’s book, Beyond this Moment are available in the library for students to borrow.
Cattle Handlers
Our student cattle handlers are busy with the show circuit having recently competed in the Westbury and Scottsdale Shows. Well done to all students involved who always represent the school with pride and enthusiasm. Commitment and passion is displayed by our students with the regular training sessions, the early morning starts and long days at the shows. They always listen to the feedback from judges and continue to build on their skills. We wish them all the best for the Deloraine Show this weekend. Thanks to Ms Rattray, Mrs Fletcher, volunteers and families who support our students to attend the shows.
Student Leadership 2024
Nominations have opened for students wishing to be part of our Student Leadership Board and students will be speaking to the year 9 group on Monday before voting occurs. Taking on a leadership role does require courage and aspiration, key values that underpin our school and the Department for Education, Children and Young People. We encourage students to step up to the leadership positions in each grade and be an important part of our student voice in the school.
Northern High Schools Basketball Tournament this weekend
Best wishes to all students representing Scottsdale High School in the Northern High Schools Basketball Tournament in Launceston over the weekend. Thanks to families who are supporting their child to participate and to Mr Petterwood, Miss Walker, Miss Juraimi and Mrs Taylor for coaching the teams.
Uniform
Well done to all students who are wearing their school uniform to school every day with pride and thanks to families for your support in ensuring your child wears the correct uniform. Students are reminded that non-school hoodies and jackets should not be worn and with the warmer weather, these should be left at home. If you need support with uniform, please contact the school.
Students needing to remain on site all day
We have a duty of care for students during the day. Year 7- 10 students are not permitted to leave the school grounds. We have an excellent canteen and K1 Café that students can access. If in exceptional circumstances your child needs to leave the school grounds, students must have written permission from their parent/carer and must sign in and out through the office.
Students also need to enter the school grounds as soon as they arrive by bus or are dropped off by their parent or carer.

TELL SOMEONE
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.
Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your child/children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that everyone understands the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.
Students from Scottsdale High School attended Remembrance Day at the Scottsdale Anzac Park. We are so proud of all students who contributed to the Remembrance Day service.
Tori H and Miss Rainbow attended the Launceston Remembrance Day Service. Here they met for the first time with other fellow Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize winners. At this session they began researching events of WW1. More details about the upcoming trip in April 2024 can be found by following the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize Facebook page.
Queen Victoria Museum and Beta Park Visit
On Thursday 16th November, Year 8 students ventured into Launceston to visit the Queen Victoria Museum and Beta Park. At the Museum students had the opportunity to explore parts of Tasmanian historical wildlife, old systems of transport and communication, aviation and had the opportunity to experiment with hands on scientific equipment.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in rock climbing at Beta Park. This activity tested students on their physical strengths and coordination. Students displayed exemplary behaviour and it was a privilege for staff to take students out for the day.
Thank you to Miss Simmons, Mrs Taylor and Mr Buechner for facilitating and organising this event.
On the 21stNovember, Year 7 students headed to the Hollybank Forest Reserve to participate in a program run by the Forest Education Foundation as part of their current Science unit on Biology.
The program was split into three separate sessions with focuses on Forest Ecosystem Data Collection, Forest Food Webs, and Decomposers and Biodiversity. Each session was highly beneficial and relatable to the work students have been completing in class.
Thanks to the Forest Education Foundation Staff and the Scottsdale High School Staff who accompanied the group for their organisation and work which contributed to a great day.
Our Inter-High Swimming Team did a phenomenal job at the Division 2 Inter-High Swimming Carnival, with many students swimming up in higher grade races and placing well in their races.
The students showed great resilience and sportsmanship throughout the event, cheering on their teammates as well as filling in without hesitation when needed. As a team, they managed to clinch 3rd place overall for the event. Our Senior team came 4th in their division and our Junior team placed 3rd for their division. Well done to all swimmers, we are very proud of your efforts and perseverance. Thank you to parents/carers who came down to support our students as well.
We look forward to seeing our students build on this success in next year’s carnival.
