Disney’s High School Musical – 2023 Production
Wow! What a wonderful production week it has been at Scottsdale High School this week with Scottsdale High staging Disney’s High School Musical. Congratulations to all students and staff involved in staging five shows including a matinee performance on Wednesday. Our cast was made up of 45 talented students – each one shining on stage, committing to their role and bringing energy to their performance. Our backstage and technical crew consisted of 18 students who fulfilled their roles in a very reliable, responsible and professional manner.
In observing Miss Brittany Walker and Mrs Liz Sharp working with our students to bring this musical to the Scottsdale High stage, it became apparent to me that these teachers epitomise the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s values that underpin our school culture and enable our staff and students to move out of their comfort zones and be aspirational. We can most certainly see the value of aspiration amongst the students. Every single person involved in this production wants it to be an amazing and memorable experience for the audience with all giving their best effort to make this happen.
Respect is a value so highly demonstrated by all students involved in the production. Students show respect in so many ways; encouraging one another in times of doubt or exhaustion; congratulating one another on the roles that people have won; helping each other out with learning lines or dance choreography; listening to others’ interpretation of lines and how they should be delivered. They also do this by being sensitive to one another’s needs and acting on direction given by their teachers.
Immense courage is shown by students throughout the whole process – from the rehearsals where they audition with the knowledge that they may receive a knock back for a role they’d love to be cast in; to performing in front of family and friends. Other students show courage by taking on backstage or technical roles that demand a great deal of responsibility, such as being in charge of props and assisting with lighting and sound.
Growth is highly evident throughout the whole process of staging this production. Students grow in so many ways; their vocal and acting skills improve and develop as does their stage craft. But more importantly, it is their growth as people that impresses me greatly. We see students’ confidence increase and relationships with others form, deepen and blossom. Students also learn to be more resilient and understand more deeply the importance of teamwork and not letting others down; hence, “The show must go on”.
And of course, all these values are embodied and modelled by our dedicated and talented Performing Arts team, Miss Walker and Mrs Sharp, whose direction, vision, collegiality, leadership and commitment to students is beyond exceptional. Many thanks to the following people/businesses:
Mr Lynden Russell for his technical expertise,
Mrs Taylor and Mrs Tuffin (Miss Brown) for their work backstage
Mrs Fletcher for her work front of house
Micheal St Micheal and Gab Smalldon for the vocal tutoring and support.
Looking Great Beauty Salon and Teazed Hair for their donations and services.
Launceston College who generously provided costumes and props.
All staff who have supported the production in various ways from ticket sales through to timetable changes and set construction.
A very big thank you to our families, who have encouraged and supported their child(ren) to be a part of the production, and all who were able to come along and see this fabulous show. We are very proud of all our production students and we are sure they will carry with them lasting and precious memories formed through being part of the 2023 production team.

Cattle Handlers
Our Cattle Handling Program has continued to have another successful year. Well done to all our students who have been involved in Cattle Handling this year. Last week several of our students represented the school at the Stanley Show where a first and third place was gained for Heifers and Reserve Champion Junior Heifer was awarded. Well done to Adara who was the Junior Cattle Handler Champion representing AGFEST at the Stanley Show. I am in awe of the skills these young people possess and the knowledge and expertise they have developed through this program. We are fortunate that this extra curricula activity, now in its 25th year at Scottsdale High School, is available due to the ongoing commitment and dedication of Mrs Kylie Rattray and the support of a number of volunteers, families and breeders. Many thanks to Matthew Cassidy, Pip Hall, Belinda Fletcher and parents and carers who so generously support this program. Our Cattle Handling students are to be commended for the enthusiasm, interest and passion they bring to the program.
Upcoming Celebrations
We look froward to our end of year celebration assemblies and to our Year 10 celebration events including our Year 10 Celebration Dinner at the Scottsdale Football Club Rooms on Tuesday 19th December and Year 10 Picnic at Bridport on Wednesday 20th December. We know that education and/or training to Year 12 is vital but the end of Year 10 is the point in time when students who have been together for a number of years tend to go in different directions. These celebrations remain an important milestone for our students.
The last day of term, 21st December, we see all Year 7-10 students heading to the Scottsdale Pool to conclude the year. Please complete the paperwork that has been sent via SchoolStream or alternatively, your child can collect a hardcopy from the office.
Reports/ Academy and Electives for 2024
End of year reports will be sent home with students on Friday 15th December along with Year 9/10 Academy and Elective allocation or Year 8 Elective allocation. If you have any questions about reporting or subject choices, please contact the school office.
