Principal's Report

Dear families,

As we come to the end of another term, I would like to thank all of the staff for their dedication to our school and students.

I would also like to thank all of our students for the way they have applied themselves to their learning this term. Many students have taken up opportunities to extend their learning in extracurricular activities such as camp, production and sporting teams.

Congratulations to students who have been recognised as Good Choice Superstars this term! It is pleasing to see students’ dedication to their learning in a variety of subjects.

I have been particularly impressed with the way students have conducted themselves over the past few weeks with wet weather. Having breaks indoors is not the easiest, however, our students have been respectful and cooperative during this time making it more enjoyable for everyone.

Many of our students this term have been able to experience what it is like in a workplace thanks to the hard work of Mrs Kruska. Many hours of work go into preparing the paperwork required for businesses and students and without her dedication to this program it would not happen!

Thank you to parents and families who completed the recent Family School Satisfaction Survey. We appreciate your feedback and will use the information to help direct our work next year.

Over the past four weeks we had Miss Shannon Annis completing her Master of Education prac with us. We would like to congratulate Miss Annis on her work and wish her all the best for the completion of her studies.

Ms Williams returns next term from long service leave. I would like to thank Miss Walker, Mrs Howlett, Miss Simmons and Mrs McDougall for their support over the past four weeks whilst Ms Williams has been away.

I hope everyone has a restful and safe two week break, returning on Monday the 13th of October for a jam packed Term 4!

Year 8 Camp

We headed off for camp on Wednesday the 16th of September, ready for a big day of walking. We arrived at the Field Study Centre, unpacked and got ready for the 5-hour hike to the top of Mount Cameron (Poonerlutter). On the way up we had a few breaks and explored the Rock Maze. Once we were at the top, the view was awesome! We could see many different mountains like Mount Horror and even our next stop, Petal Point (Tebrakunna).

After the long trip down the mountain, we got back to the Field Study Centre where we had some down-time, and played Blackjack, and Mafia. For dinner, we had tacos and cake to celebrate Rhys’s birthday. After dinner, we ventured into the dark night for an activity, the Tight Rope Crossing Challenge. We each took turns going across the river. Some people were brave enough to do this blindfolded.  After this excitement, we made our way back to the Field Study Centre and headed off to our dorms for a well-earned sleep.

Day two we had an early rise and had cereal and toast for breakfast. Following breakfast, we packed up the cabins and walked down to the Zip-line and spent about an hour and a half running the rope and flying on the Zip-line. Our next stop was Pedal Point (Tebrakunna), the trip was about 30 minutes.

Our next task was to find the perfect spot to set up our tents. Setting up the tents proved to be a challenge for a few groups, but once the job was done, we went down to the beach for a fish and walk around. After going back to our camp site, we again played another few rounds of Mafia, and then it was time to cook dinner. This night we were all in groups and had to cook with Trangia’s. We cooked Spaghetti Bolognaise around the fire as the sun was setting. The food was great! After the sun set, we hung around the campfire and cooked S ’mores before heading back to our tents for bed.

Day three was another early start! We cooked toast over the campfire for breakfast whilst some of us had cereal. After packing down our tents, which was again challenging for some, we headed to Musselroe Bay. When we arrived, we went for a walk along the beach and found a nice spot to fish or hang around. A few people went for a swim while others kicked a footy, it was nice and sunny and a great morning. We had lunch at the beach, went for another walk, then headed back to school. The drive back took 1 hour and 45 minutes. Everyone was tired and ready to head home. Thank you to everyone who made this camp one to remember!

On Wednesday 24th September our senior Agriculture Students travelled to Campbell Town with their Merino sheep they have been running at the farm since May, in preparation for the Tasmanian Merino Wether Competition held by Australian Wool Innovations.

Our students have gained an insight into the sheep and wool industry, and the associated industries, as well as, learning about the Merino breed and the production and harvesting of fine wool.

The two teams of three sheep are judged on the hoof for carcass and fleece qualities, as well as presentation. Our team was highly successful in gaining the following placings:

1st Carcass Value

3rd Carcass Value

2nd Fleece Value

2nd Team Presentation

2nd Grand Champion School Team

3rd Grand Champion School Team

Congratulations to all schools who competed in the competition and Campbell Town who were awarded Grand Champion Sheep Team. Thank you to AWI for organising this event in Tasmania.

Flexible Programs - Term 3

Over the course of Term 3 many of our students have been involved in Flexible Programs. These programs are designed to support student ‘s engagement, participation and wellbeing. Within lessons students engaged in a range of art, physical pursuits, wellbeing, fitness and enterprise activities depending on the program accessed.

Some of the programs included:

Art Design

In this fun and creative course students designed their own skateboard graphics and logos.

Enterprise and Service

Students in this course baked cookies, sweets and biscuits delivering them to a range of community organisations within our community.

Hands on Learning

This program is designed to simulate a real café/hospitality workplace. Students spend time preparing and cooking food and drinks, selling them in the school café.

Movement to Music

This was a creative class where students of all levels and abilities had the opportunity to move their bodies and express thoughts, feelings and ideas in a supportive, caring environment.

It was heartening to see students engage positively in these activities, grow in confidence, learn new skills and build resilience. The opportunity to interact with different people, develop communication and teamwork skills helps to set students up for positive futures. It is hoped that next term more students take up the opportunity to participate in our Flexible Programs.
